he Heartland Institute is “the world’s most prominent think tank promoting skepticism about man-made climate change.”
— The Economist, May 26, 2012
The Heartland Institute is a 30-year-old national nonprofit organization devoted to discovering, developing, and promoting free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Heartland’s Center on Climate and Environmental Policy promotes pro-environment policies based on sound science and economics, not alarmism or ideology. Our strong stand against the politicization of science on matters of public health and the environment have earned us the enmity of many liberal public health and environmental groups and their allies in the mainstream media.
In 2012, The Economist called Heartland “the world’s most prominent think tank supporting skepticism about man-made climate change.” The New York Times called us “the primary American organization pushing climate change skepticism.” We also address other environmental issues including renewable portfolio standards (RPS), clean air standards, smart drilling and hydraulic fracturing, sustainable development, food safety, and more.
Through events, publications, social media, and government relations programs we have changed public opinion on climate change and other environmental topics, and consequently helped change public policy not only in the U.S. but in other countries as well.
The Southern Hemisphere polar ice cap for the month of April 2014 surpassed its greatest April extent in recorded history. The new record extends a long-term expansion of the Antarctic ice sheet that defies alarmist claims that global warming is or should be melting the polar ice caps.
Ironically, the record Antarctic ice extent occurred as global warming alarmists released a paper claiming recent global warming has now made it inevitable that Antarctica will lose its ice cap nearly 1,000 years from now. The establishment media has given the alarmist paper extensive and uncritical press coverage, even though objective scientists have pointed out glaring flaws in the paper. For example, objective scientists question why recent warming has put the Antarctic ice sheet past a tipping point when the ice sheet has survived many warmer periods in the past.
Satellite instruments measuring the precise extent of the Southern Hemisphere polar ice cap report the polar ice cap has been steadily growing for decades. Moreover, the combined extent of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere polar ice caps have been above the long-term average almost uniformly since 2012.
The development of crops which are best suited to grow under future environmental conditions, such as higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations, “is essential to meeting the challenge of ensuring food security in the face of the growing human population and changing climate,” and in this study a high-yielding indica rice variety (Oryza sativa L. cv. Takanari) is examined as a potential candidate for such breeding, “due to its high productivity in present CO2 concentrations”… Read More

The “significance of the original habitat of the coralline calcification response to variable, high pCO2 indicates that individuals existing in dynamic pCO2 habitats may be acclimatized to ocean acidification within the scope of in situ variability”
Defense Industry and Guns
For the last 4-5 years there has been a large secondary industry building on the periphery of the environmental movement. Some of the advances of the industry have allowed for huge improvements throughout the world, including building super safe and durable materials. Some of the these materials are used inside gun safes for better and faster more efficient production.
■ Publish and promote the most important book on global warming in 2014: Climate Change Reconsidered II: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerabilities.
■ Host the largest gathering of global warming “skeptics” in the world, the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC-9).
■ Publish the most influential monthly publication on environmental issues sent to every national and state elected official, Environment & Climate News.
■ Produce a dozen other books, booklets, policy studies, and a new edition of Ten Principles of Energy Policy, and send them to tens of thousands of the most influential people in the world.
■ Conduct a comprehensive communications campaign including online and social media, public speakers, exhibiting, direct mail, and more to confront “junk science” and oppose unnecessary regulations and government spending.
■ Work with allies in other countries to oppose global warming alarmism there.
